Admission Policy

Admission Time 2 – 3.30 p.m. Discharge Time 11 – 12 noon.

Continuing Care

Private Beds: Admissions are made through the Director of Nursing.
The state subsidy (subvention) does not apply to private beds in St. Patrick’s. A visit to the hospital and a tour of the facilities in advance of admission is encouraged. The private rooms are either single or shared and do not have en-suite facilities.

Public Beds : Admissions to Long Stay Beds are arranged through the Geriatric Services in St. Finbarr’s Hospital. St. Patrick’s does not keep its own waiting list. A visit to and a tour of the facilities in advance of admission is encouraged.

Respite Care

This is a planned, short admission (one or two weeks). This allows the carer to have a break or take a holiday.

Applications are made through the patient's local Public Health Nurse. Information leaflets are issued from St. Patrick’s to all new respite patients. Patients and or families may visit before admission if desired.

Crisis Admission

This service is available when crisis occurs in the life of a carer e.g. carer illness, hospital admissions etc. Nursing care will be provided on an in-patient basis while the carer attends to his/her own needs.

Request for admission is made directly to your public health nurse.

ADMISSION TIME 2-3.30P.M.

On Arrival:

Please report to the Reception Desk. One of the Staff will come to welcome you and escort you to your ward.

Things to bring with you:

Medication
Prior to admission, you must arrange to receive an up-to-date prescription or letter from your G.P with a list of your medication signed by the prescribing doctor. You must also bring a full supply of your medication with you, for the duration of your stay. Any surplus will be returned to you on discharge.

Night and Day wear
The wards are well heated, but we advise you to wear comfortable, loose fitting garments and to bring a pair of comfortable well-fitting shoes.

All items of clothing should be marked with your name, using a laundry marker. Clothes may be taken home to be laundered. There is a laundry service available in St. Patrick’s at a nominal charge if requested. Towels and facecloths are provided.

Special Needs
If you use special dietary supplements, dressings, incontinence pads etc, please bring a sufficient supply of these with you for the duration of your stay.

Valuables
Do not bring large amounts of money or valuables with you. You are reminded that the Management of the Hospital do not accept responsibility for articles lost or missing within the hospital.

Do bring loose change for use in the payphone. A mobile shop which sells toiletries, minerals, fruit and sweets visits the wards each week.

Smoking
We strongly discourage smoking, not only for health reasons, but also because of the fire risks involved. SMOKING IS NOT PERMITTED IN ANY WARD ROOM. However, patients may smoke in a designated area of each ward, under supervision. Please arrange with the person in charge of the ward.

VISITORS MAY NOT SMOKE AT ANY TIME.

Going Home
Please arrange to be collected and escorted home before 12 noon.
